What is the Infinite Future

Recently I posted some thoughts on how to think about the rapidly developing capabilities of artificial intelligence tools Should you worry about Artificial Intelligence. One of my thoughtful readers, Tom Short, observed “…it seemed to me that very few people have the depth of knowledge and understanding needed…” to understand the issues I was raising. He suggested that I try to provide some explanations of what this technology is, how it developed, and where it is going. And while there are quite a few people more qualified than me to cover the technical aspects of this field, there aren’t a lot of generally accessible sources of information.
I was further inspired by a conversation with a friend and his daughter, just starting her freshman year of high school – these topics are going to be so important to the next generation as there are key events that will happen as they are growing into adulthood – For example, Ray Kurzweil predicts that we will have a machine convincingly pass the “Turing Test” by 2029 – in just six years from now.
My goal will be that each day I will provide you with a short article (about the length of this one) which will either relate something about a current development in the field of artificial intelligence, some historical information about how we got to where we are today, or speculation on where this is all going. I am not promising anything overly original – just thought provoking and accessible. I hope you’ll join me on this journey into the infinite future.
